Scots Newspapers Go To Barclays And Northcliffe
The sale of the remaining Thomson Corporation regional titles was completed last week with buyers being agreed for the Scottish titles. Northcliffe Newspapers has agreed to buy the Aberdeen-based titles, including the Press and Journal, for £82m; the deal is subject to a review by the Monopolies and Mergers Commission. Until completion, the Aberdeen centre will be managed by Thomson.
The Edinburgh titles, which include the Scotsman and the Edinburgh Evening News have been bought by the Barclay brothers, owners of the European, for a sum believed to be around £90m. The sale of Thomson’s Scottish titles completes the sale of all of Thomson’s UK newspaper publishing interests, following Emap’s purchase of the Luton centre and Trinity’s purchase of the Belfast, Chester, Cardiff and Newcastle centres earlier in the year.
Michael Brown, president of the Thomson Corporation commented, ‘We are delighted that David and Frederick Barclay and Northcliffe Newspapers will be the new owners of our Edinburgh and Aberdeen newspaper activities. We believe they will strongly support the independence of the newspapers and continue their development.’
