Scottish Media Group Appoints Cruickshank As New Chairman

The Scottish Media Group (SMG) has appointed Don Cruickshank as non-executive chairman, as from 1 June 1999. Cruickshank was previously director general of OFTEL between 1993 and 1998, and has also held executive positions at Pearson, Times Newspapers and the Virgin Group.

Andrew Flanagan, chief executive of SMG, commented: “We are privileged to have Don Cruickshank joining Scottish Media Group as our new chairman. His commercial and regulatory expertise in the media industry will help us further drive forward our strategy of developing the company as an independent broad based media group.”

SMG acquired the Scottish outdoor advertising companies Baillie Advertising and Baillie Lite at the end of last month (see Newsline). The company’s continued independence has also been questioned recently as ITV heavyweight Granada bought Mirror Group’s 18.6% share in SMG (see Granada To Buy Mirror’s Scottish Media Stake). It has been suggested that Granada may want to launch a buy-out of SMG in order strengthen its position in the ITV Network.
