Second DAB Multiplex Licence Up For Grabs

Second DAB Multiplex Licence Up For Grabs

Ofcom Logo From today, Ofcom is advertising the licence for the second Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) national radio multiplex.

The multiplex licence allows the broadcast of radio services as well as other services, including mobile television channels.

Ofcom says this represents the first step in its DAB licensing programme intended to lead to a significant expansion in both local and national digital radio services over the next three years.

National Grid Wireless (see NGW Could Bid For Second Multiplex) and Channel 4 are two broadcasters expected to bid for the multiplex licence, with Channel 4 current favourite to win the race

At this week’s MediaTel Group future of radio seminar, Nathalie Schwarz, director of radio at Channel 4, outlined the broadcasters vision for the second multiplex should it win the bid (see Channel 4 Outlines Vision For Second Multiplex).

Speaking today, Schwarz said: “With an unrivalled track record in broadcasting innovation and creativity Channel 4 can give a fresh burst of energy to the commercial radio sector and help it regain its market leadership from the BBC.

“We are excited by our developing plans for a number of brand new national radio stations, which will carry the 4 brand and bring its distinctive values to life with a diverse mix of contemporary speech and music output.

“The launch of channel4radio.com earlier this year has demonstrated that a real appetite exists for the talent and the fresh ideas that Channel 4 can bring to radio.”

The licence for the second multiplex will run for a 12-year period and the Government is currently considering whether multiplex licences granted after 1 October of this year should be eligible for renewal when they expire.

The closing date for the receipt of applications is 3pm on 28 March 2007. A non-refundable fee of £50,000 will be payable for each application submitted.
