Seven Applicants Bid For South Wales Licence
The Radio Authority has announced details of the applicants for the Independent Local Radio Licence for South Wales after the deadline for applications passed yesterday. Seven applications have been submitted for the licence which covers Cardiff, Newport and Swansea and surrounding areas.
The most highly publicised application is that of The Radio Corporation with its station The Rox-Wales 105, which has local celebrities Sian Lloyd and Gareth Edwards on its board (see Local Personalities Join Bid For South Wales Licence). Its mix of rock and pop and Welsh interest for the 25-44 age group is the most popular programme format for the licence with similar services planned by Vision 105 FM from the SW Radio group, 105 The Flame from the Wireless Group and Real Radio from the Guardian Media Group.
An older, more female biased audience is targeted by the South Wales Regional Radio Group with their offering, Nation 105FM, and Jazz FM South Wales hopes to attract another region to its service.
The UK’s first interactive FM radio station is the final applicant. Combining terrestrial and internet programming targeting the youth of South Wales, the.living.radio.ltd will offer interactive services on top of a traditional regional service.
The Authority plans to announce the winner of the award in Spring 2000.
