Seven Per Cent Of Net Users Prefer Online News

Two-thirds of regular internet users read online news bulletins, according to the latest findings from BMRB’s bytesize report. A total 72% of men and 56% of women who use the net once a week or more, are heavy users of online news.

ISP’s and broadcasters’ and newspaper owners’ websites all attract large numbers of readers to their news services, attracted by “as it happens” rolling information. At work people are more likely to want breaking news, while those using the internet in their homes are more likely to seek out in-depth detail on a news item.

Online versions of newspapers are competing with the offline titles to a small degree. Seven per cent of active net users (just under 1m adults) say that they have actually stopped reading a printed newspaper or magazine in preference for its online version, and a further half million surfers have stopped reading a printed newspaper in favour of the online version of a competitors title.

Alternative technologies are likely to accelerate the trend towards online news services, with WAP mobiles and palm tops providing the portability element denied to PC users.
