Shopping Sites Dominate UK Women’s Top Web Destinations

Despite the investment made in launching sites for women on the web recently, (see Feature: Publishers Bring Women’s Sites Into Focus) only one women’s portal, handbag.com made it into the top ten sites for UK women during November.

According to the research by Jupiter MMXI, women are more drawn to the retail possibilities of the web, with four e-tail sites, including online toy-store Etoys.co.uk which came in at number 1, appearing in the top ten. Four of the top ten sites were US based, including bluemountain.com, which allows users to send virtual greetings cards.

A more unusual entry at number 2 was the Department of Education and Employment website, dfee.gov.uk. However, this is probably explained by the fact that school league tables, which were published last month, appear on the site.

The top ten rankings for all users in the UK have not changed from October (see Internet Top Ten Still Dominated By Search Engines As New MMXI Methodology Introduced) to November, with the major search engines still gaining the largest numbers of unique visitors in terms of both the UK and the whole of Europe.
