United News & Media is believed to have received up to twenty expressions of interest in its regional newspaper business, United Provincial Newspapers, which was put up for sale last month *United Set For Regional Sell-Off. Tony O’Reilly’s Independent Newspapers and Trinity International, the regional newspaper group, are thought to be front-runners in any competition to take over UPN, which is worth around £60m.
…The ITC has announced that it will be conducting a public interest test on the Scottish Television takeover of Caledonian Publishing. Within this, the ITC will examine any detrimental effects regarding the objectiveness of news reports and the economic dominance of such a media organisation. Parties wishing to comment on the merger should contact the ITC in writing by September 20.
