Simon Waldman, Guardian Media Group’s group director of digital strategy and development, is leaving to join LoveFilm.

From 17 May, Waldman will be group product director at the DVD rental service.

Waldman, who has been at GMG since 1996, was launch editor of Guardian Unlimited in 1999 and has been group director of digital strategy and development since 2006.

Waldman wrote on his blog: “I have had the good fortune to work with fantastic people, with a wonderful boss, in an organisation that values innovation and encourages free thinking. I couldn’t have asked for more.

“Fourteen-and-a-bit years later, this chapter of my career is coming to an end. In a couple of weeks I’ll be leaving to take on a new challenge – as group product director at LOVEFiLM. To say I’m excited doesn’t even start to scratch the surface of it.

“I’m obviously sad to be leaving the Guardian and GMG – but I have had a very, very good innings, and the team there is probably better than it has ever been. The site continues to fizz with innovation and creativity. Long may that last.”
