“Size matters”: TiVo to launch 24 terabyte DVR

Does size really matter? It does according to TiVo, which has developed a new DVR with 30 times the capacity of most cable and satellite products.

With 24 terabytes of storage – the equivalent of 26,000 hours of standard-definition, or 4,000 hours of high-definition recording space – TiVo Mega will allow users to stream live and recorded TV content to TVs, smartphones and tablets anywhere.

Users will be able to universally search across cable, video on-demand and web apps including Netflix and YouTube, while a ‘what to watch’ feature will provide a personalised dashboard with recommendations for what is on.

A free smartphone app means that users will also be able to manage their DVR with their mobile or tablet.

“Size matters. People hate being forced to delete cool stuff from their DVR before they want to or finding a TV show they had recorded is now gone,” said said Ira Bahr, CMO at TiVo.

“Now, with TiVo Mega they can always know their show or movie is still there to watch later. It’s the solution for the power user who wants to record everything.”

TiVo Mega is expected to be available for retail during the first quarter of 2015, with pricing estimated at a hefty $5,000 (£3,098), meaning it is unlikely to upset the market with such a price tag.
