Sky Analogue Switch Off May Not Come Until September

Sky’s summer analogue switch-off date could be as late as September and will leave a potential 60,000 analogue customers with the choice of either switching to digital or losing their multichannel services.

BSkyB originally planned to switch off its analogue service in June this year, having converted all but 250,000 of the 3.5m analogue customers it had two and a half years ago to the Sky Digital service. However, at the announcement of the company’s interim results this morning (see BSkyB To Cease Analogue Broadcast This Summer), the date put on switch off was stated as “summer”, which, according to a Sky spokesman, could mean September.

The broadcaster’s main subscription income now comes from the 5.4m customers it has signed up to its digital service, but a spokesman pointed out that while the analogue service continues to bring in money, there is no hurry to switch it off before the majority of the remaining analogue customers are converted.
