Following hot on the heels of a deal with Spotify to bring a dedicated music app to Sky Q boxes, Sky announced on Thursday (1 March) a new deal with Netflix allowing subscribers using the ultra HD Sky Q platform in the UK and Ireland to have access to a new Sky subscription pack containing full Netflix content.
The deal is somewhat unusual though, as Netflix traditionally provides its own (lower cost) app to set-top boxes but with the Sky partnership, content will be directly available within the Sky Q interface.
The unique offering will mean that existing Netflix customers will be able to migrate to the new Sky TV bundle and pay the Netflix subscription fee to Sky directly, or simply sign into the Netflix Sky Q app. Either way subscribers will be able to access popular Netflix shows like The Crown, House of Cards, Narcos and Stranger Things later in the year.
Commenting on the announcement both Sky and Netflix chief executive’s were excited about the new deal. Jeremy Darroch, said: that Sky was “making the entertainment experience even easier and simpler for our customers.” His counterpart at Netflix, Reed Hastings, was equally enthused, stating that “Sky’s customers will be able to seamlessly access and enjoy all the best entertainment in one place.”
