Sky Bags Rights To Star Wars Movies

BSkyB has won the right to broadcast all four instalments of the remastered Star War series. The group reportedly paid £12m to secure the rights, which will return to British television for the first time in 12 years.
The deal includes the UK TV premiere of The Phantom Menace, the latest Star Wars movie, which was released in the UK in 1999. All four films will be shown on Sky Premier, the satellite broadcaster’s subscription channel, on four consecutive Saturday nights from March 17.
One of the largest pay-outs for a film package, the deal underlines the increased value of pay-tv content as broadcasters battle to line up their wares.
Separately, BSkyB may not carry new Vivendi/NTL-backed movie channel, The Studio, on its satellite platform. It is believed that increased competition and high subscription charges have meant that Sky and the two parties have failed to reach a carriage agreement.
