Sky Digital Secures New Channel Carriage Deals
BSkyB has signed a five year carriage agreement with cable and satellite youth channel, Rapture Television. Rapture joins the Sky Digital line-up tomorrow, with broadcasts initially only at weekends, but increasing to seven days a week from February next year.
The agreement increases Rapture’s reach by 1.8 million homes; the channel now reaches six million homes in total and is distributed as a free-to-air channel to all of Sky Digital’s subscribers. Rapture’s commercial director, Robert Ditcham, says: “This is a phenomenal deal for us and marks the final major piece in the distribution jigsaw. It has been a sensational year for Rapture; we are the fastest-growing channel for 16-24 year olds and are on track to offer our advertisers the channel in every multichannel home in 2000.”
Separately, BSkyB has won the airtime sales contract for Irish entertainment channel, Tara Television. It is understood that Tara has withdrawn sales from its current sales house, Carlton Digital Sales, after long-running speculation that Carlton is to close a number of its pay-TV channels (see Carlton Expected To Axe Pay-TV Channels).
