Sky’s head of news and sport left yesterday, after two months of tension with BSkyB’s new managing director, ex-Sun editor Kelvin MacKenzie. Ian Frykberg had been head of news and sport for 15 months.The dispute was over MacKenzie’s desire to take Sky news downmarket, with more human interest stories and less foreign coverage.

NEW SUBSCRIPTION CARDS

BSkyB has issued new subscription cards, in a further attempt to beat pirates. Sky said yesterday that the new cards would “put all existing pirates out of action”.

BBC REBUKED BY BSC

The BBC has been criticised by the Broadcasting Standards Council for paying criminals to appear in The Underworld, and showing a friendly conversation between Ronnie Biggs and Frankie Fraser, a former criminal.
