Sky Scottish To Close

Sky Scottish To Close

Scottish Media Group and BSkyB today announced that their jointly-owned Sky Scottish cable and satellite channel will be closing on 31 May. This is due to the channel not meeting the financial targets set when it launched in November 1996 (subscribers see STV Announces New Channel).

It is expected that the close-down of Sky Scottish will not have a material impact on Scottish Media group’s 1998 financial results. Donald Emslie, managing director of Scottish’s Broadcasting division, said: “Sky Scottish has been a very valuable learning experience as we move towards the new era of digital broadcasting.”

It is understood that BSkyB and Scottish will continue to work together on sports programming for both STV and STV’s future digital output.

Scottish shares slumped 3.5p to 726.5p this morning while BSkyB was unchanged at 445p.
