Sky Signs Up As Talk Radio News Provider
Talk Radio has signed up Sky News to provide a UK-wide news service, planned for launch in June. IRN’s contract with Talk Radio is expired, and both IRN and Sky pitched for the new contract (see Newsline).
Sky Sports secured a deal with Talk Radio late last year to provide the station’s sports results, news and interviews (see Newsline), so was at a slight advantage in the running. In addition to this, TalkCo – which recently acquired Talk Radio (see Newsline) – is partly funded by News International, which also owns 40% of BSkyB.
Sky is in the process of appointing a new team to produce the news service, and the group will be led by Sky News senior producer Andy Ivy. Kelvin MacKenzie, chairman and chief executive at Talk Radio, commented: “We have signed with Sky News as part of our overall effort to provide our listeners with the best, the fastest and the most informative news service in the country.”
