Sky Sports Gains Irish Football Rights

Sky Sports has secured a three-year deal with the Football Association of Ireland for the UK rights to Irish international games. Under the terms of the agreement the broadcaster will hold the live rights to all home internationals involving the Republic of Ireland up to the end of the 2002 season, all home World Cup qualifying ties, and next year’s US tournament.

Announcing the deal the chief executive of the FA of Ireland Bernard O’Bryne said: “This is an exciting new development for us, with guaranteed live coverage of our international matches on Sky Sports. We are delighted to have concluded this deal.”

The deal enhances Sky Sports’ international line-up which already includes live coverage of all Scotland and England international games.

Managing director of Sky Sports Vic Wakeling said: “We are looking forward to this new relationship with the FAI and are pleased that Sky viewers will be able to see the Republic of Ireland, Scotland and England live as the nations start their qualifying campaigns for the 2002 World Cup.”

The news comes a week after FIFA announced it will allow pay-TV channels to bid for the broadcasting rights to the 2002 World Cup itself (see FIFA Signals The End Of Free To Air World Cup).
