Sky Sports Launch Football Competition
![]()
Sky Sports is launching an interactive “play along” football competition offering Sky Digital subscribers cash prizes.
The competition launches on 21 October to coincide with the live Premiership match between Leeds and Chelsea and allows viewers to make pre-match predictions via their remote handset. Each correct prediction scores points, which are submitted via the digibox at the end of the match to check whether the viewer qualifies to win a cash prize.
Digital TV has had success with its interactive coverage of sports events. The BBC’s interactive Wimbledon service attracted more than 1 million viewers last summer (see Game Set And Match To BBC’s Interactive Wimbledon) and Sky Sports’ interactive football option has always proved popular with viewers. However, according to a recent BMRB survey, interactive adverts are proving far less of a hit, with only 12% of digital viewers having ever interacted with an ad (see Interactive Ads Flop With Digital Viewers).
Digital TV received a boost last week with the launch of the Government’s Digital TV Action Plan (see Government Launches Digital TV Action Plan), which it is hoped will make the digital switchover possible by the proposed 2006-2010 deadline.
