Sky Wins C5 Text Licence
The Independent Television Commission has awarded the Channel 5 teletext licence to Sky Five Text, which is jointly owned by BSkyB and Channel 5 Broadcasting. It is expected that the service will begin broadcasting within the next year though the actual licence will be granted by the ITC in the next twelve weeks.
The licence was awarded by a competitive tender process which meant that Sky Five Text was successful because its cash bid of £1.5m was higher than the £313,000 being offered by the only other applicant, Teletext’s Text5.
Robbie Alexander, managing director of Sky Five Text, told Newsline that the service will be primarily aimed at holiday-makers. As well as basic services such as news, sport, weather and TV listings, there will be a more in-depth holiday section which aims to be supported by holiday and travel advertisers.
