Sony today unveiled the brand new addition to its Xperia range – the Xperia Z Ultra – named the world’s slimmest smartphone with the largest HD screen.

The passport sized phone is just 6.5mm thick – so thin in fact that Sony have said they’ll be considering connector innovations for future models, as the current phone is almost as thin as the jack itself.

The IP58 waterproof model’s key feature is its triluminous display, bringing “rich, natural colours” and “razor sharp viewing” to images. The main camera is 8 megapixels, while the front facing camera is 2 megapixels.

Other features include both stylus and pencil input, handwriting recognition, NFC one-touch functions, stamina mode, extended battery life and a charging pin with magnet.

The model also offers a Bluetooth handset for on-the-go use, enabling users to speak through the Bluetooth handset attached to the shirt or jacket, rather than trying to search through pockets and bags for the phone.

Sony is currently ranked third in terms of value share in the UK smartphone market, and brand awareness for the company has more than doubled in the last six months.

Following the success of Sony’s first Smartwatch, Thomas Waldner, senior design manager at Sony, announced that a Smartwatch 2 is to be launched in the near future.
