Sponsorship Deal Sends TalkSPORT Snooker Loopy

National commercial speech radio station TalkSPORT has secured computer games company, Codemasters, as the sponsor of its championship snooker coverage.

The month-long deal, which encompasses the Regal Scottish Open and the Embassy World Championships, is designed to raise awareness of the latest sports simulation game from the computer games group.

The sponsorship will include an on-air competition offering listeners the chance to win a trip to Scotland to meet and receive snooker tips from Stephen Hendry.

The deal was negotiated by Matt Wilson, sponsorship and promotions executive at TalkSPORT’s sales house Impact and Kate Jaggers at MJ Media.

Commenting on the deal, Wilson said: “TalkSPORT is the ideal media placement for a sports simulation game – and Codemasters know they are right on target with an audience of committed sports and games enthusiasts.”

TalkSPORT has secured a number of high-profile sponsorship deals recently, including tie-ins with Xerox (see TalkSPORT Secures Xerox For Golf Sponsorship Deal) and Siemens (see TalkSPORT Secures Siemens As Drivetime Sponsor). This has helped the station’s sales house, Impact, to see revenue from sponsorship and promotions increase by 35% year on year during the first quarter of 2003.

Last week TalkSPORT’s parent company, The Wireless Group, released its year-end financial results showing a 74.8% reduction in operating losses, which were £2.3 million in 2002, down from £9.1 million a year earlier (see Wireless Group Cuts Losses Despite Poor Markets).
