Sporting Coverage Row Continues
The row over terrestrial v pay channel coverage of sporting events continues to heighten. The latest furore concerns rumours that Murdoch is considering introducing pay-per-view television for the World Boxing Council title fight on March 16. Viewers to BSkyB may have to pay up to £20 to see Frank Bruno fight Mike Tyson.
Frank Bruno’s world title boxing match, which took place in September provided BSkyB with what was their largest ever audience, 3.43m viewers. However, they also claimed that the real figure, taking into account viewers in pubs and bars would be more likely between 10 and 20m.
Labour has this week said it intends to introduce amendments to the Broadcasting Bill to stop all big sporting events being taken away from terrestrial viewers.
