Star Wars Help April Cinema Admissions Grow
Average weekly Cinema admissions in April grew 0.7% year on year to reach 2.67 million. Over the whole month a total of 11.4 million people went to the cinema which is the highest April figure since 1974.
The Cinema Advertising Association gave the Star Wars films and Space Jam as reasons for the high attendances during the month. The top five grossing films for April 1997 were Star Wars (£6.4m), Empire Strikes Back (£6.0m), Space Jam (£5.1m), The English Patient (£5.0m) and Romeo & Juliet (£4.3m).
