Star Wars Sends Cinema Admissions Sky-High
UK cinema admissions saw a 20% year on year increase during May, thanks to the release of Star Wars: Episode II – Attack Of The Clones. Total admissions for the month were 14 million.
Star Wars achieved the highest opening weekend of the year so far at the box office, taking £9m in its first weekend and going on to total £24m in box office revenues for its first two weeks of release. It is the second highest opening box office ever, and in this respect outperforms Star Wars: Episode I, released last year.
Other good performers during the month were About A Boy, which, in its second month took £10m at the box office, making it the 5th most popular film of the year so far. Jodie Foster thriller The Panic Room grossed £7.4m while Brit Flick Bend It Like Beckham took £3.8m and remained in the top ten films of 2002.
