Strathblane Appointed New Chairman Of RAJAR

Chairman of Scottish Radio Holdings, Lord Gordon of Strathblane, has been appointed chairman of RAJAR, replacing John Whitney who will retire later this year.

Lord Gordon, who has had an extensive career in radio, was appointed chief executive of Scottish Radio Holdings in 1996. Prior to that he was managing director of Radio Clyde, which was one of the first commercial radio stations to be established in the UK.

Over the years Lord Gordon has held a wide range of directorships and has been chairman of the Commercial Radio Companies Association, vice-chairman of Melody Radio and chairman of Scottish Radio Network.

Commenting on his appointment, Lord Gordon, said: “RAJAR is so firmly established that it is easy to take for granted. People might forget that only 10 years ago the BBC and the independent system produced separate and often conflicting audience figures. It was hardly surprising that the public in general, and advertisers in particular, were consequently unlikely to trust either. I played some part in the establishment of RAJAR all those years ago and so was delighted to accept the invitation to succeed John Whitney as chairman when he retires at the end of the year.”

RAJAR has come under criticism recently with Wireless Group chairman, Kelvin MacKenzie, claiming that the company’s diary system of audience measurement “woefully under-estimates” radio audiences (see TWG Research Claims Radio Listening Is Under-Represented).

However, RAJAR recently announced that it has moved into the third phase of its audiometer testing programme (see RAJAR Enters Third Phase Of Audiometer Testing) and hopes to complete trial of US manufactured Arbitron portable people meter early next year.
