The Sunday Telegraph is publishing a special one-off supplement to support the forthcoming Wimbledon tennis championships.
The supplement, entitled John McEnroe’s Wimbledon, will appear next weekend with the support of an extensive television and radio advertising campaign. It will contain a range of features and interviews about Wimbledon over the years and John McEnroe, famed for his on-court temper tantrums, will share his personal memories of the championships.
The Telegraph will also mark the start of Wimbledon fortnight, with the launch of a new online Fantasy Wimbledon tournament. Users will be able to enter the competition for a subscription fee of £3.50 and will be able to win holidays and Wimbledon-related merchandise.
Commenting on the new initiative, Jim Cameron, online gaming manager at the Telegraph, commented: “At Sport Telegraph our aim is to provide users with a wide variety of high quality online fantasy games, including cricket, golf and Telegraph fantasy football online. We hope the new fantasy Wimbledon game will bring more interest and enjoyment to the tournament this year.”
This month the Daily Telegraph unveiled the third phase of its brand campaign in its largest ever foray into outdoor advertising. The campaign, which follows the title’s redesign (see Daily and Sunday Telegraph Set For Major Re-Design), is part of an £8 million nation-wide promotion (see Daily Telegraph Launches Nation-Wide Ad Campaign).
Commenting on the campaign, Mark Dixon, marketing manager at the Telegraph group, said: “This third phase of what is our biggest outdoor campaign again reflects our best-seller message, marketing the Daily Telegraph on the basis of its editorial excellence.”
However, according to the latest ABC figures for the six months ending May 2003, the Telegraph’s marketing campaign has failed to halt its declining fortunes, with circulation slipping by 71,721 year on year to 933,028.
