Surf’s Up As Daily Telegraph Targets Younger Readers

The Daily Telegraph is continuing its efforts to appeal to a younger readership by sponsoring the Rip Curl Boardmasters surf and skate festival in Newquay, which runs between 26 July and 3 August.
The recently relaunched broadsheet is running an in-paper competition with Nokia to offer readers the chance to win a weekend for four in Newquay with surfing lessons, a free mobile phone and spending money.
Commenting on the initiative, Mark Dixon, marketing director at Telegraph Limited, said: “We’re delighted to be the media partners for the Rip Curl Boardmasters 2003. Surfing is becoming increasingly popular in the UK and we’re sure that this year’s festival is going to be extremely successful.”
Earlier this year the Daily Telegraph relaunched with a series of editorial changes, a new-look front page and new title design in an attempt to broaden its appeal to younger readers (see Daily Telegraph Launches Nation-Wide Ad Campaign).
However, the latest ABC results for the six months to June 2003 show that the title, which recently ended the practice of bulk sales (see Telegraph Group Puts An End To Bulk Sales), has seen circulation decline by 7.7% year on year to 927,672.
