Survey Shows Rise In Listenership For Independent Radio Stations

Irish independent radio stations are continuing to increase their listenership according to the latest J.N.L.R/M.R.B.I Interim Report published this week. The survey shows that nation-wide 53% of listeners tuned into the independent stations each weekday compared to 36% for Radio 1 and 29% for 2FM. For the same six month period last year, the independent sector had a listenership figure of 50%, Radio 1 had 38% and 2FM had 28%.

The J.N.L.R./M.R.B.I. Interim Report relates only to the stations in Cork and Dublin as the sub-samples for most of the local stations would be statistically inadequate for such an analysis. The Survey also provides a national analysis of listenership figures and a regional breakdown, but it does not provide market share figures.

“The independent stations have clearly established themselves as the preferred option for the Irish listening public with over half of the country’s listeners tuning into an independent station each weekday” said Michael O’Keeffe, Chief Executive of the Independent Radio and Television Commission.
