Switch Digital Prepares For Scottish Bid

Digital radio consortium Switch Digital has joined forces with fledgling station, Beat 106, to boost its bid for the regional digital multiplex licence for central Scotland. The consortium, which won the second digital multiplex licence for London (see Switch Digital Wins Second London Licence), will be backed by the Wireless Group, Scottish Media Group, Clear Channel International, and the Carphone Warehouse for the Scottish bid.

The Scottish multiplex is the largest so far outside of the London area, and will cover the populations of Glasgow, Edinburgh and Stirling, reaching a total of almost 3 million listeners.

Switch Digital director Jason Bryant said: “I am delighted to have teamed up with Beat 106. The station has already developed a strong following and will be an automatic choice on our digital multiplex alongside the Wireless Group’s regional station, Scot FM. Switch Digital is currently researching other formats to build diversity for Scottish listeners and we will be announcing the full line-up in our application to the Radio Authority in August.”

Beat 106 launched last year broadcasting dance music to a young audience . It’s first RAJAR report last week showed it had already gained a weekly reach of 334,000 listeners (see March 2000 RAJAR – Local Commercial Stations).
