Talk Radio Catches Coca-Cola Cricket Coverage
Talk Radio has sealed a deal for the exclusive rights to broadcast cricket’s Coca-Cola Cup, which takes place in Sharjah, Dubai. The tournament, a warm up to the World Cup in May, takes places between 7 and 16 April and will see England face up to Pakistan and India.
Talk will broadcast coverage of the matches in its SportZone programme between 4pm and 8pm. Geoff Boycott is to provide the commentary of England’s matches live from Dubai.
Since the buy-out of Talk Radio by Kelvin MacKenzie’s TalkCo consortium, there has been a steering of the station towards the broadcast of sports events. Buying the rights to top sports competitions is a tactic that has been used by BSkyB to drive its business forward; Rupert Murdoch’s News International, which holds a 40% stake in BSkyB, provided financial backing for the TalkCo buyout.
MacKenzie recently lobbied the culture secretary, Chris Smith, in an attempt to gain entrance to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) in order to compete with the BBC for broadcasting rights to sporting events (see Talk Protests Against EBU ‘Cartel’ Over Radio Sports Rights).
