Telegraph Deal Gives Readers Taste Of The Big Apple

The Daily Telegraph has secured a deal with the New York Times to become the exclusive British carrier of a weekly eight-page supplement showcasing premium content from the American newspaper.

Entitled The New York Times International Weekly, the supplement will contain a series of cherry-picked features, reports and graphics from the American broadsheet. It will also include articles on world trends, Americana, money and business and science and technology.

The supplement is designed to extend the reach of the New York Times into foreign markets, targeting what the newspaper sees as “globally aware, culturally active, business-involved readers”.

Commenting on the newspaper’s foray into the British press, Cristian Edwards, president of The New York Times Syndication Sales Corporation, said: “The Daily Telegraph reaches these readers and we are very pleased to be taking The New York Times‘ journalism to this audience. Our shared commitment to the ideals of sound journalism and the importance of a free press makes our titles well matched.”

The supplement, initially to be published with 400,000 copies of the Telegraph in London and the South East, will also be carried by France’s Le Monde and the International Herald Tribune, giving advertisers maximum pan-European exposure.

Commenting on the deal Nick Edgley, international advertisement manager at Telegraph Group Limited, said: “This is an extremely exciting project for The Daily Telegraph. Each week, our readers will be offered an American point of view on world events from America’s leading newspaper. We’re delighted that The New York Times recognised us, Britain’s best-selling quality daily, as the right UK newspaper for this initiative.”

The Telegraph has hit rocky ground recently with latest ABC figures revealing a 4.5% year on year decline in circulation for the title to 916,925. Sales of the broadsheet have been hit by the increasing popularity of compact editions from the Independent and the Times.

Meanwhile, American publishing giant Gannett recently confirmed its intention to join the long list of potential bidders vying to take control of the Daily Telegraph from beleaguered Hollinger International (see Gannett Confirms Plans To Swoop On Telegraph Titles).
