Telegraph Stumps Up Cash For Cricket Sponsorship

The Telegraph Group has bowled over the competition to become the official partner of the England and Wales Cricket Board and the England Cricket Team. The newspaper group will also sponsor talkSPORT’s coverage of the forthcoming Test Series in the West Indies.

The wide-ranging deal includes advertising around the perimeter of cricket pitches and 30-second television commercials on replay screens as well as advertisements in the official programme and sampling.

Commenting on the deal, the Telegraph Group’s marketing director, Mark Dixon, said: “With a team of top cricket writers and contributors, including Michael Atherton, Scyld Berry and Steve James on The Sunday Telegraph and Mark Nicholas, Simon Hughes and Derek Pringle on The Daily Telegraph, both papers offer superior cricket coverage.”

He added: “Partnering with the ECB and the England Cricket Team is an exciting opportunity for us and we’re delighted to strengthen our cricket portfolio with this and the talkSPORT Radio sponsorship.”

The Telegraph has embarked on a raft of sponsorship deals lately, both as the sponsor, and sponsored party. Last month saw deals with River Island and Wella to secure funding for the Telegraph‘s fashion and hair sections, while ITV secured the newspaper group as the exclusive £4.5 million sponsor of its coverage of the forthcoming Formula One season (see ITV In Poll Position With Formula One Sponsorship).

In an unrelated development The Daily Telegraph has agreed to carry a 60-page, full-colour advertorial watch supplement on 15 April to coincide with the Baselworld 2004 watch and jewlery fair in Basel, Switzerland. The supplement will be carried simultaneously in three other european national newspapers and will feature several prestigious advertisers including: Rolex, Cartier and Tag Heuer.
