Television And The Role Of ITV

ITV today published ‘Television and the Role of ITV’ an independent report comissioned by Spectrum Strategy Consultants. Launching the report, the Chairman of ITV, Leslie Hill, said, “This is the first time that ITV’s value to the UK television industry has been quantified!”. The report makes seven points.

  1. British television is important culturally and economically.
  2. The British television industry is very successful compared to its European counterparts.
  3. ITV plays a crucial role in British television.
  4. The success of British television is founded on substantial investment in original British programming.
  5. The terrestrial broadcasters (including ITV) operate in a delicate television ecology
  6. The balance that sustains British production and programming is now challenged – as the pace of change in broadcasting accelerates.
  7. Significant decisions affecting British television will be made over the next 3 years (1996 Digital TV, 1997 Launch of Channel 5, 1998 Renegotiation of payments to Treasury by ITV companies).
