Television Programmes Need More Content Warnings

The majority of viewers want more guidelines on television programme content, such as pre-transmission warnings, according Broadcasting Standards Council research. 94% of viewers would welcome more guidelines especially for programmes that contain violence, sexual material and bad language.

At present the most reliable indicator of content is seen to be programme timing, with 65% of people using this as an indicator. 53% use the programme trailers, 39% consider the channel an indicator and 34% use the presenters or actors to gage programme content. 78% of people are aware of the 9:00pm watershed and 75% consider this as a vital indicator.

The research was carried out on behalf of the BSC by Broadcast Research Ltd and involved a national poll of 1000 adults. The full results are available in the 1995 BSC Annual Review The Scheduling Game.
