Television Round-Up – December  TV Revenue

The combined ITV/C4 revenue figure for December, based on agency estimates, came in at £156.84m, up 9.3% on December 1993. The ITV figure was £123.84m, up 6.6% year on year; C4’s figure was £33m, up 20.7% year on year. The ITV:C4 split was 79:21, an improvement for C4 from 80:20.

Among contractors, the best performance was YTTV, up 3.51% points on last year to 10.47% share, a sign it is pulling back from last year’s overdealing problems. Westcountry TV, up 0.12% points, and Carlton, up 0.53% points were the only other contractors to improve on their 1993 shares. LWT fared worst, losing 1.31% points despite having an extra trading day in 1994; Central also lost 1.34% points.

MESSAGES

The combined ITV/C4 messages for December fell across all audiences compared to last year, with the worst performance coming from housewives with children, down 4.1%. ABC1 Adults also fell a significant amount, down 4.0%. The audience that suffered least was Men, down 1.8%.

COSTS PER THOUSAND

The rise in revenue together with the fairly heavy fall in messages meant there was a significant rise in costs per thousand across all audiences, but especially among Housewives and ABC1 Adults, whose messages dropped most.

TV VIEWING

In terms of share of viewing, the BBC fared better than it did in November, with both BBC1 and BBC2 increasing share, mainly at ITV’s expense, which dropped from 39.9% share in November down to 38.2% share in December.

INDUSTRY NEWS

December was a quiet month for television news; BSkyB announced it is to offer a Disney Channel next autumn, and dealings in BSkyB’s shares began. Granada was fined £500,000 for Richard and Judy’s This Morning show when it breached ITC Codes.
