Telewest Becomes UK’s Fastest Broadband Provider

Broadband Cable Cable giant Telewest has begun roll out of broadband lines at a blistering 10Mbps, making the company the fastest domestic provider of internet services.

The company began to switch customers to its new service earlier this month, with those currently signed to its Broadband Elite package and receiving speeds either 2Mb or 4Mb the first to be upgraded.

The upgrades will take place on a region-by-region basis from this month, with completion of the work scheduled for early next year.

40,000 Scottish customers in Motherwell, Dumbarton, Castlecary and Uddingston have already received speedier connections, with 100,000 customers in London expected to benefit from ultra high speed connections by the end of the month.

Explaining the move, Eric Tveter, president and chief operating officer of Telewest Broadband, said: “We’re committed to rolling out these significant speed increases to all of our blueyonder internet customers by early next year. Combined with our new PCguard security package, our customers are enjoying fantastic added value.”

Earlier this month Video Networks Ltd (VNL), provider of London’s on-demand TV and broadband service, HomeChoice, announced its plans to roll out ADSL2+ technology across its network. The new technology has the potential to vastly increase its internet connection speeds, with the company’s first tests proving its ability to provide internet speeds of up to 24 Mbps (see HomeChoice Sets Out Next Generation Network Plans).
