Telewest Buys Franchise From Bell Cablemedia

TeleWest has announced that it has bought the cable franchise which covers the Worcester area from Bell Cablemedia.

Telewest, the UK’s biggest cable company, paid £9.8 million for the franchise which will cover 75,000 homes and 5,00 businesses. BCM Worcester is not yet operational and is a dormant company.

Alan Michels, Chief Executive Officer of TeleWest commented: ‘This is another example of TeleWest adding value to its business, acquiring a complimentary franchise in the Midlands on what we believe are attractive terms.’

According to the latest ITC cable statistics, for October 1995, Telewest is by far the biggest of the cable operators, having passed over 1.7m homes, and connected to 356,108. Its nearest rival in terms of homes passed, Nynex, has passed just 872,238.
