Telewest Communications today launched its new digital television service under the brand name Active Digital. Tagged by the promotional slogan “Now It’s Your Choice, Not Just More Choice”, it offers customers an “a la carte” selection of channels.
To avoid confusion in the mass of channels currently available, the Telewest service provides five different packages on top of which incremental channels can be added. Presenting the launch the group’s chief executive Tony Illsley said: “[This] is a major step forward as it gives the customer complete freedom of choice and puts them in control of the technology.”
A future-proofed digital home terminal incorporating a cable modem and with the ability to link to a PC will allow internet access and a range of interactive services are planned for the future.
The initial launch is in the Midlands area, with consumer marketing starting on 29 October. The group plans to give 50% of its homes the ability to access digital services by Christmas, rising to 90% by June 2000.
