Telewest Subscribers Up 50%

TeleWest Communications, owned by TeleCommunications, the largest cable operator in the US, announced results for last year. Net losses almost doubled to £65.1 million. The deficit however, was in line with expectations and both revenues and subscriber numbers improved in 1994.

Alan Michels, chief executive said television subscribers in owned and operated franchises had risen 50% to 179,096 while residential telephone subscribers more than doubled to 128,149. TeleWest experienced a 47.1% “churn” rate among subscribers in 1994, however, significantly higher than the 39.1% recorded in 1993. Churn is the ratio of total subscribers disconnected for whatever reason to the average number of subscribers. The company said it was considering a move into mobile telecommunications.
