Tesco Signs Up To ONnet To Offer Groceries Via TV Set

ONdigital and supermarket chain Tesco have teamed up to add Tesco’s online shopping service to the ONnet service. The new service, Tesco Access, will be available through the internet set top boxes distributed by ONdigital to its subscribers for £5 per month and non-subscribers for £8 per month.
John Browett, chief executive of Tesco.com, commented, “We know that not everyone has access to a PC and we want to offer grocery home shopping to as many customers as possible.” Tesco’s claims its service is already available to 90% of the UK population, and takes up to 70,000 orders per week.
The deal will make Tesco the first supermarket to offer a full grocery range to shoppers through the TV, as other retailers have so far only offered a limited range. Further items such as CDs, DVDs, home and electrical goods are to be added after launch.
Last week, the possible rebranding of ONdigital as ITV digital was mooted in plans for a revamp of ITV headed by chief executive Stuart Prebble (see Prebble Heads Up An Integrated ITV). The digital service has been a cause for concern to investors, having failed to match rival Sky Digital in uptake rates.
