Test TV Transmissions For Visually Impaired
A consortium of broadcasters and organisations working with visually impaired people have launched a trial of Audetel, a system which provides an aural commentary to selected television programmes.
For the next four months, selected programmes on ITV and BBC will be broadcast with a data signal which carries an audio commentary describing what happens in the programme during the gaps in the dialogue. A special receiver is necessary. 140 receivers have been installed countrywide for the trial.
The consortium hopes that the audio commentary will also appeal to fully – sighted viewers who want to follow a programme while for example ironing or working on the car. Consortium members include BBC, ITV and the Royal National Institute for the Blind.
