Text Messages Surge As Premiership Reaches Climax
![]()
65 million text messages were sent throughout the UK on the last day of this season’s Premiership, according to the latest data from the Mobile Data Association (MDA).
The figures reveal a surge in the number of person to person SMS messages sent on 11 May, as football fans relied on friends or football alert services to receive the latest news from Premier League grounds.
This eclipses the 58 million messages sent on the day that England defeated Argentina in the first round the 2002 World Cup finals, but is someway short of the 78 million text messages sent by Britons last Valentine’s Day.
Commenting on the data, Mike Short, chairman of the MDA, said: “The large number of text messages sent on the last day of the Premiership confirms that football fans see text messaging as the most efficient and discrete way to keep up-to-date with the scores in a crowded and noisy environment.”
The text message craze shows no signs of slowing and the latest monthly figures from the MDA reveal that text messaging reached an all time high in March, with an average of 56 million SMS messages sent each day during the month (see Text Messaging Hits All Time High In March).
March was also a good month for mobile internet services, which attracted 560 million page impressions during the month, representing an increase of 16% on February’s total (see WAP Usage Figures Peak At Half A Billion During March).
