The number of text messages sent in the UK during March was up by 100 million on February, at 1.3 billion, according to the latest figures from the Mobile Data Association (MDA). This total is more than three times what it was during March 2000, illustrating the medium’s rapid growth in popularity.
The highest ever number of messages sent in a month was in January this year, when New Year’s greeting messages helped push the total to 1.4 billion. In the first quarter of this year total of 3.9 billion text messages were sent, a 33% increase on the same period last year and almost quadrupling the total for Q1 2000.
Globally, 75 billion text messages were sent in the first quarter of this year, a 50% increase year on year for the period. It is now forecast that the total for 2002 will reach 360 billion, compared to 250 billion in 2002.
