Text Messaging Continues To Blossom During April

The SMS craze shows no sign of abating with 1.66 billion person to person text messages sent across the four UK GSM networks during April, according to the Mobile Data Association (MDA).

April’s figure takes the daily average number of text messages to 55 million, up from 44 million in the same period the previous year and from 30 million in April 2001.

According to the MDA, the latest figures confirm text messaging as the “premier communications tool for the millennium.”

The total monthly text messaging figure for May is also expected to show an increase in activity, after 65 million text messages were sent throughout the UK on the last day of this season’s Premiership (see Text Messages Surge As Premiership Reaches Climax).

Recent research from the MDA has revealed the gendered nature of the SMS craze, with 74% of women claiming to have sent a text message within the last two minutes, compared to just 26% of men (see Women Lead The Field In Terms Of Text).
