Text Trend Continues To Blossom During May
![]()
The text messaging trend shows no signs of slowing according to the latest figures from the Mobile Data Association (MDA), which reveal that 1.38 billion person to person SMS messages were sent during May, an increase of 46 million on the previous month.
Over 45 million text messages were sent across the four GSM network operators each day during May, compared to just over 30 million in the same period last year. This takes the UK text messaging annual total to around 6.6 billion, against a 12 month forecast of 16 billion for 2002.
The MDA predicts a continued rise in UK text message usage for June, with mobile phone users exchanging World Cup scores, arranging jubilee celebrations and registering their Big Brother eviction votes via SMS.
A number of high profile text message campaigns have been launched recently. Last week Flytxt unveiled a national SMS ad campaign to promote FilmFour’s latest cinema release (see Flytxt Takes Mobile Phones Users To The Movies) and earlier in the month 12Snap was selected as MTV’s “preferred partner” for mobile marketing activity in the UK and Ireland (see 12Snap Forms Mobile Marketing Partnership With MTV).
