Text Trend Shows No Signs Of Slowing During April

1.3 billion text messages were sent in the UK during April, an increase of one million on March, according to the latest figures from the Mobile Data Association (MDA).

April’s figure represents the ninth consecutive month that over a billion person to person SMS messages were sent and according to the MDA, confirms predictions of a steady growth in text messaging.

Britons now send 44 million text messages each days across the UK’s four GSM networks, compared to just 30 million in April 2001. This takes the annual total so far to 5.2 billion, against an MDA forecast of 16 billion for 2002.

The MDA is predicting a continued rise in text messaging for May, with thousands thought to have used SMS to make their bank holiday arrangements. The warm weather is also expected to bring an increase in text messaging and a recent survey from the MDA shows that the majority of mobile phone users favour SMS over postcards as a means of staying in touch during their holidays.
