The Economist simultaneously celebrated a landmark achievement last night and ushered in a new management regime.
Publisher David Hanger welcomed a large gathering of agency and advertiser guests to a reception at London’s Earth Galleries to mark circulation reaching one million copies worldwide. Infact, he reported that the landmark achieved in the July-December ABC reports had already been comfortably surpassed since.
In particular, Hanger paid tribute to UK sales having exceeded 150,000 – a level he had not anticipated would be achieved. He did not add that these increases were occurring in a media environment where many competitive quality newspapers are suffering, not least the Economist‘s own stablemate, the Financial Times, which saw its circulation dip by 1.2% year on year to just under 430,000 in the six months to January.
David Hanger leaves the Economist after over 30 years at the end of March, and introduced the new management team – all drawn from within the company.
Andrew Rashbass takes over as publisher, Olly Comyn, who had been operating in the States returns as UK sales director and Alan Dunachie takes up a wider operational role within the business as European advertising director.
