The press barons behind The European are rumoured to be looking to add The Independent and The Independent On Sunday to their media empire. The Barclay brothers are reported to have approached Mirror Group and Independent Newspapers of Ireland, the current owners of The Independent titles, about making a bid for the papers.
The Barclay brothers were unavailable for comment.
