The European’s Time Is Up

The European’s Time Is Up

The closure of The European is imminent as the title has failed to find a buyer. The paper announced in late September that it would fold if a buyer were not found within 30 days (see Newsline), and a spokesperson told Newsline this morning that the shut-down will go ahead.

The final edition of The European will be available on 14 December, after which the title will cease publication.

The title’s readership has fallen fairly steadily since 1991, with sporadic fibrillations, and is currently at 126,000. In the period Jan 98 – Jun 98 the title had a circulation of 111,225.

The 50 staff on the title will be seeking new jobs, although the editor Andrew Neil will stay on at European Press Holdings as editor-in-chief.
