The Future Is In The Air
Price Waterhouse’s Entertainment Media and Communication’s forecast for 1998 predicts that satellite technology will continue to grow and establish its prominence as a communications system. This casts doubt on the widely accepted belief that the future is cable.
The report also forecasts that Internet television will grow in stature and the integration of TV and computing technologies will continue; although the TV will remain the focus for family entertainment and the PC will continue to be used on an individual basis.
Looking back, the report points out that many previously ‘hot’ convergence developments, such as interactive TV and Internet retailing, have failed to emerge as expected. Instead, the EMC marketplace has shifted in emphasis towards convergence and consolidation within industries, rather than between industries.
The Price Waterhouse forecast is drawn from the firm’s research and in-depth interviews with over 70 senior industry executives.
